What is the difference between Karate and Tae Kwon Do?   

Karate is Japanese in origin while Tae Kwon Do is from Korea.  Typically Karate practitioners will use a balanced array of hand and foot techniques as well as joint locks and take downs where as Tae Kwon Do uses primarily kicking techniques.

What style of karate is North Sound Karate?

NSK teaches Shindo Jinen ryu Ryobu kai, one of the original styles of karate recognized by the Japanese government.

What ages does North Sound Karate teach?    

North Sound Karate offers instruction for people of all ages beginning at age 4.  We currently have students from 4 years old through 72 years of age and all ages in between.

Is Karate appropriate for me / my child? 

While self defense is always a product of karate, North Sound Karate provides a safe, goal oriented program designed to reward self accountability and quality effort.  Increased awareness, discipline, advanced motor control skills and fitness levels are some of the benefits of our program.  Other benefits include: classes taught in Japanese and English as well as the use of a structured belt system.

Can I take classes with my child?   

Yes, North Sound Karate stresses the importance of family activities and offers an outstanding family discount.  We also provide many extracurricular activities for parents and children alike to get involved in.

How many times a week can I attend class?

North Sound Karate has an unlimited attendance policy which is included in our affordable monthly rates.  This means that with class times available Monday through Friday you may train up to five days a week at no additional cost.  A recommended schedule is a consistent three days per week. 

When can I enroll in North Sound Karate?    

North Sound Karate has ongoing open enrollment.  We have a quality certified staff of instructors to ensure manageable class sizes for individual attention.

Do I have to buy a Karate uniform?     

There are many incentive programs available at North Sound Karate which includes a free uniform.  Our goal is keep training costs as affordable as possible for you.

Is competition mandatory at North Sound Karate? 

Competition is never mandatory at North Sound Karate.  It is however a great tool to gauge self achievement and become part of a larger karate community.  Everybody is highly encouraged to try or observe a competition at least once.

What belt system does North Sound Karate use?

At NSK we use a traditional 10 belt system.  The belt order is white, orange, low blue, high blue, low purple, high purple, low green, high green, low brown, brown, high brown and black.

How long does it take to achieve black belt?

There is no set time frame to attain black belt.  Consistency of attendance and individual learning rates are the main factors in determining advancement in rank. 

Does North Sound Karate offer personal karate lessons?

Yes, while in most cases a group setting offers the best practical experience, one on one lessons are also available. 

Can I take karate if I have a medical condition?

Any medical condition must be referred to a physician prior to enrolling in North Sound Karate.  In the majority of cases, with a doctor's approval, karate can be beneficial in the recovery or aid of many conditions.
